Decorating kitchen walls can be tough. I’m not a huge fan of store bought decor anyway but the “kitchen themed” stuff really turns me off. If you follow me you know, I love wings and I’ve told you how I have them in almost every room of my home. They would be in every room but I can’t seem to get my boys on board for wings in their rooms. Anyway, when I started decorating my freshly painted kitchen walls, I immediately thought of these neglected plastic wings I picked up on clearance last year from Oriental Trading Company!
They spoke to me from the Halloween Clearance Section, “You can make me special!” I ordered them and had good intentions of covering them in vintage paper but they’ve hung naked in my closet since they arrived. When I decided to hang them in the kitchen I ditched the vintage paper idea and went straight for the coffee filters! I’ve crafted many things with coffee filters over the years … lamp shades, hanging lights, and simple things like this wreath. I always love the depth they bring and thought coffee filters were more fitting for a kitchen
I started by removing the strings that held the wings together.
Starting at the bottom, I began layering and hot gluing folded coffee filters to the wings. I used a low setting because the plastic was pretty thin.
I used the grommet hole on the inside of each wing and poked a hole on the opposite side to hang them. A little twine was all that was needed as they are still super light. I chose to hang mine from my rusty, vintage bread racks. They’d be epic hanging alone too though. The entire project cost me less than $15! Now, Oriental Trading no longer carries the wings but you can find them here on Amazon. They’re $22 but trust me, the finished project (costing less than $25) is well worth it! The shape of the plastic wings adds dimension you just cant get by gluing the filters to something flat, like cardboard!
I love them with my whole heart! Hope you enjoyed that quick tutorial! If you make them for yourself, share them with me! I love to see the uniqueness of handcrafted decor! Make something beautiful today!
