Headboards like this one can be found at thrift stores and even along the roadside! Folks toss them all the time! Pick up the next one you see and upcycle that gem!
First things first…Off with the legs! I used a miter saw to hack mine off {quick and easy} but you can use a hand saw too.
Step two: Remove the crusty, busted wicker.
I was precise in removal because I wanted to use the wicker as a template for a chalkboard.
A jig saw is perfect for cutting out round shapes.
Using a foam roller, Benjamin Moore’s Black and Websters Chalk Paint Powder, I applied 3 coats to the wood insert to create a chalkboard.
While the chalkboard was curing, I fancied up the headboard. I wanted it to look like patinated metal so I chose Modern Masters Metal Effects Paint. I used Iron and Bronze Paint and both aging solutions {Green and Blue}.
The process is really fun and simple and you can read more details about it here.
I LOVE watching this stuff work!
I used a staple gun to put it all back together. Tip:Use gloves when working with chicken wire
The addition of hooks makes this a very versatile project! It makes a great landing spot for the kid’s backpacks, jackets, and notes from school, PLUS you send them off with a positive, handwritten note from mom. <3 Add a few hanging baskets for paper or bill storage and you have the perfect command center!
The slim profile makes this ideal for narrow hallways and entries!
