Letterpress Lover- A Mid Century Makeover with Debi’s Design Diary’s DIY Paint

I don’t know about you but trying new things makes me feel some kinda way! There’s always that touch of nervousness {which I LOVE} when I first begin. Then comes the excitement of the learning curve {which I LOVE} where I let go and let the product teach ME. Then finally, the falling in love stage when it all comes together!

If you got all that, we are pretty much bff’s because you’re addicted to the creative process too!

Let me tell you about my love affair for the week! He’s been collecting dust in the corner of the shop since summer. Mid Century Dresser Makeover by A to Z Custom Creations using Debi's Design Diary DIY Paint

He had a few rough spots that required love but was in great condition otherwise. Mid Century Dresser Makeover by A to Z Custom Creations using Debi's Design Diary DIY Paint

I painted his mate months ago, leaving him lonely and needy for attention!

I’ve wanted to make him sing but time and a lack of inspiration have kept me from from it, UNTIL…

My good friend Debi from Debi’s Design Diary released this gorgeous new line of paint! There are 20 shades of awesome in the collection now with an additional 5 on the way. With the dresser in mind, I chose my colors based solely on their {brilliant} names! He’s a sturdy, mid-century fella with strong lines and perfectly placed curves. It made the decision between ’57 Chevy and Letterpress Grey impossible, so Debi sent me both! I really do <3 her!

She also sent me White Wax {excited to use}, Liquid Patina in Crystal Clear and Dark and Decrepit! More on that in a minute!

As always, I took to the shop for more inspiration. I have old, rusty, crusty stuff everywhere for that very purpose! I immediately gravitated to this old letterpress stamp I use as a paper weight. I’m pretty sure it’s the number 6 but I claim it as my initial!

All that patina! The wood tone on the block, the grey metal peeking through all those rust and blue hues…inspiration was born! Turns out I’d ordered everything I needed to make it come to life too! I love it when that happens!

The DIY Paint was thick and delicious looking! Knowing I already had to contend with the raised grain on the dresser, I went with brush strokes! Not something I do a lot but the vision led me there! To help give the guy some nice grooves, I used a Polyester brush when lathering on the paint. Debi recommends using a wet brush if you want a smooth, brush free finish. The paint went on beautifully and dried quick {in about 30 minutes}. I applied a second coat of Letterpress Grey after hitting the edges with ’57 Chevy. I distressed the edges and all the perfect imperfections with a combination of wet and dry distressing.  I gotta say, I LOVE the way the DIY Paint wet distressed! So slow if you choose that route as the paint will come off quickly. I sealed the paint with  Liquid Patina in Crystal Clear Chandelier…UUUH-MAZING stuff! I love that you can use it indoors or out and it won’t yellow!

This stuff is good, y’all!! I couldn’t get the hang of the foam brush so I used my go-to…a primed chinex bristle brush. IMG_6540 copy

I liked him already but he looked way too clean! Enter Dark and Decrepit Liquid Patina…

So easy to use! It dried rather quickly, which I liked! It settled into all those lovely grooves but wiped away from the high points easily with a wet cloth. I fell in love with the splatters I created {by accident} so I totally left them! Mid Century Dresser Makeover by A to Z Custom Creations using Debi's Design Diary DIY Paint

It was around this time {which happened to be late at night} I realized this guy had more to say! Of course he would…he was a word man, right?  I went to my paper drawer and started looking for something to help him tell his story. I found three sheets of this scrap book paper which happened to be the perfect amount to cover the four small drawers. Given the hour, I abandoned him for the night. I tossed and turned {no joke} thinking about it all coming together! I lost serious sleep over it!

The next morning I rushed to the shop to give him his words!

Low and behold, he had more to say!

“Dirty Words, Please”

No, seriously, that’s what he said!

The paper just looked too new…

…so I distressed it and accented the edges with Dark and Decrepit Liquid Patina.

Oh, about that hardware! It was happy to hear it was getting a sweet dose of patina too!

Mid Century Dresser Makeover by A to Z Custom Creations using Debi's Design Diary DIY PaintIt pains me to say this guy can’t be in my life. I simply don’t have the space! If you’re looking for a strong, gritty guy who knows how to use his words, scoop him up! He’d stand proud in a living room as a media stand or behind a sofa. He’s also the perfect height for a changing table or buffet! I’m gonna drool over him till someone claims him ;)
