Making A Rental A Home

Ahhh. What a weekend! I did NOTHING, friends! Absolutely nothing. Well, I take that back. I binged on Netflix {Orange Is The New Black rocks} and touched up my hot pink highlights. If you know me, you know how hard the stillness was for me. I’m a busy bee and I rarely watch the television but I forced myself to this weekend! So. Glad. I. Did.

The down time gave me a chance to really connect with my self and disconnect with all the looming projects around me. It’s not that I don’t want to finish them but many are still “speaking” to me. I told you last week that you’d see some changes in the blog’s subject matter to include projects other than painted furniture. This is the first of many to come and will hopefully connect with and inspire renters everywhere.

Before we get into the post, let me say this. I believe a home is what you make it. Renting definitely poses challenges, especially for us who have owned a home and had the freedom to knock down walls if we wanted to! I’m here to tell you it can feel like home though! What I quickly realized in my search for a home was that my budget restricted me from renting a turn key house. I narrowed down my search by ditching the wants and focusing on my family’s needs. As always, the “needs” list ended up much smaller than my desires! It basically boiled down to it having an adequate number of bedrooms, at least two toilets {I could handle sharing a shower with my boys but my own toilet was a necessity…boy moms will totally understand} being in a safe neighborhood and within a certain driving distance to the boy’s school. Cosmetic issues have never scared me and it’s a good thing because the place that met all my needs was NOT cute inside. The hardwoods were nice but the dated wallpaper and off white contractor paint made the house feel cold and unwelcoming. Check out the before pics:

There were a million things I wanted to change immediately but as a renter, I had limitations. My request for removing the wallpaper and painting was approved but I had to choose neutral wall colors. Totally okay with that! I went to work on the walls immediately as they really impact the overall appearance more than anything! I was hoping for cheap wallpaper and poor installation which would have made removal easy but the quality was good and I’m pretty sure it was applied by a pro. This tool saved me many tears!  Updating and decorating a rental by A to Z Custom Creations

I used it to score all the paper before spraying it with wallpaper remover. Updating and decorating a rental by A to Z Custom Creations

After the adhesive remover had soaked thru, I used this guy to remove the paper. Both tools can be picked up at Home Depot or your local home improvement store. Updating and decorating a rental by A to Z Custom Creations

Some, not so much! The backing on this wall required its own scoring, spraying and scraping!Updating and decorating a rental by A to Z Custom Creations

After many hours and a few beers, I finally accomplished the task of removing all the paper!

Do you see how removing the border and painting the walls really opened up the space? Completing “Stage One” left me eager to decorate!

I’ve shared a few sneak peeks of the living room with this window covering project and my gallery wall but I can’t wait to share the rest! Stay tuned in the coming weeks for the tips, tutorials and reveals. You can follow along with real time project pics on Instagram too! I hope the transformations will inspire you to make the most of the space you have whether you rent or own!

  1. WOW!! Makes a huge difference and I’ve been there with the wallpaper. It can be a beast. Great job, Darlin.
