A New Story

From soft, worn linens and clothes to colorful canisters and chippy window panes, I am crushing on all things vintage!  Antique furniture tops my list though! Ornate details and quality construction make my heart skip a beat! Besides the fact that it has withstood the test of time and still has purpose, every piece has a story. Sometimes, I am lucky enough to hear the whole story from the original owner or the person a piece has been passed down to. Other pieces tell their own story. Some are riddled with cracked varnish and dinged up drawers. Others have been showcased and pampered for hundreds of years! Either way, I am hooked!

Marietta called me about a piece she wanted to have refinished. Even though it served a purpose as extra storage, the finish left much to be desired, so she had it tucked away in the corner of a closet. I showed up with no great expectations so I was completely shocked when she opened the closet door! Only the front of the dresser was visible but it was swoon worthy! I am pretty sure my mouth dropped open when she moved the stored goods and revealed the gorgeous top! It had curvy lines, ornate details and original hardware.

At first glance, it was absolutely stunning!

Up close was a different story! From top to bottom, side to side, this piece had been REALLY abused!

Marietta’s husband, Randall, filled me in on the story behind the chest. He bought it 20 years ago from a friend who owned rent houses. One of his tenants moved out and abandoned not only this piece, but several antique gems! Randall was smart to scoop them up for a steal of a price! I was thrilled when they gave me creative license to do whatever I wanted to do with this piece!

I removed the sticky rings and lightly sanded the top. I filled the missing veneer on the sides but chose to leave all the imperfections on the drawer fronts. I felt like they were so much a part of the story so instead of HIDING them, I HIGHLIGHTED them!

Amazing what paint can do right? Details that once blended in to the darkness not only stand out now, they draw you in. Distressing turned the chips and dings into imperfect marks of beauty and character. A lot of furniture has made its way through my shop over the years but only a few have made it into my heart! This one did just that! The once abandoned chest of drawers had very little worth to anyone. With a new story to tell, it is, and will be loved and showcased for generations to come.
