Repurposing a Sewing Machine Drawer- Giveaway Included!!!

Okay, so the cool blue sewing machine drawer I showed you during my Hometalk Segment yesterday…started out like this:

sewing machine drawer before- A to Z Custom Creations

Not cute, I know! Chances are, you’ve seen these at flea markets and yard sales and passed them over! Most of them haven’t seen the light of day and have been stored in garages and barns for a long time so they are usually pretty crusty when you find them! Don’t be afraid!

After a quick wipe with plain water to knock off the gunk, I give them a good washing with T.S.P. That will release the hidden oils and tannins and help prevent bleed through. You can read more about that here.

I mixed a color wash with Websters and Benjamin Moore’s Antique Glass. With the exception of the panel I wanted to use as a chalkboard, I gave the whole drawer two coats of paint.

I gave the small panel 3 coats of the chalkboard mixture, lightly sanding between coats with an extra fine grit sanding sponge. I keep a little jar with a “chalkboard” mixture on hand but you can see exactly how I mix that here.

I wet distressed the drawer, just enough to show all the {perfect} imperfections. After seasoning the chalkboard panel with chalk a few times, I left a coat of chalk on it while I waxed the drawer. I did that just in case my brush got over onto the chalkboard panel. The chalk would have helped soak up the wax and give me a time to wipe it off before it saturated into the black.

I waxed the blue part of the drawer with Daddy Van’s then accented with Daddy Van’s Antiquing Wax {coming soon…squeal!!!}.  It gave the color a perfectly aged look and accented the crevices perfectly!

Did I mention how much I LOVE this?!? I’m showing it with office supplies but the possibilities are endless!!! I use sewing machine drawers inside other drawers to wrangle junk, under my bathroom sink , in the shop for quick receipt storage…and on, and on!
