Resuscitating Furniture- A Dresser Makeover

If you follow me on Instagram (and if not, whatcha waiting for?) you’ve seen me use the hashtag #painttherapy often. It’s fitting for me because my work really is therapy. Not only am I providing it to the furniture, I receive it! The last two weeks have brought some serious patients into the shop. Today I’m sharing one that, while still strong and sturdy, had deep wounds, burns, and scars. It had been passed down several times and served it’s purpose well. My client considered purchasing a new dresser to use as a changing table in her baby girl’s nursery but decided to keep this one alive instead.

Nothing makes me happier than hearing that!!

I went right to work on the wounds! The stain was very thin and the wood was soft so I hand sanded all the imperfections until they were smooth.

I never recommend using an electric sander on spots when the wood is soft. You will quickly go too deep and create divots. Once that happens, you really have no other choice but the sand the entire surface. Not cool! I used a sanding block and a light grit paper and focused all my attention on the spots.

Once the deep wounds were mended, the paint therapy began. The nursery was being built around these drapes:

My client wanted peeks of cream {the color of the crib} to show through the rich, wine color so I applied “Layers of Love“.

  1. Beautiful as always Angela!! Did you use a bruch or roller to apply the paint?

    • Hey Dennise!

I used both on this one. I used a roller to paint the drawers and the top but finished the rest of the body with a brush :) Thanks for adding to the post! Angela
