Roadside Rescue-Seeing And Creating Beauty

The dictionary defines trash as: anything worthless, useless, or discarded; rubbish.

Worth is a relative thing, would you agree? Unless of course, you’re a financial planner or of the like and you use a set formula or methodology to assign value. Otherwise, worth (like beauty) is determined by the eye of the beholder. Take this table for instance. The owner saw no value in it so it was discarded as trash on the curb. I passed it on the way to take the boys to school one morning but had no room in my car. I could see pretty legs peeking out from below trash bags and I just knew it would be gone before I got back. Lo and behold, hours later, the table was still there. It had been moved, tossed around a bit from its original spot. Obviously, someone stopped and gave it a once over. They saw no value either.

My heart raced as I got out of the car to get a closer look. The table was upside down, her curvy legs in the air. I could tell it was solid wood and remember thinking, why in the world is this still here? I flipped it over revealing deep scars  and carvings all over the top. That’s what it was! Like so many pieces I’ve loved on before, the scars kept folks from seeing the beauty! Can I tell you how quickly I loaded her into my car?

I promise, I hoisted that heavy thing into my tiny trunk in like, 3 seconds flat! I had nothing in the car to tie down the trunk so I pretty much coasted home with fingers, toes and ovaries crossed. Where there’s a will there’s a way!

Here’s a better look at the top:

Using several shades of Moxie Paints (Scandanavian Blue, Slate, and Driftwood) and a bit of white I already had mixed, I created an ombre effect that reminded me of the sky the morning I rescued her. The clouds were ominous and the rain that had teased us all the way to school began to fall heavily as I loaded her up.

I highlighted all her perfect imperfections with natural distressing then gave her two protective layers of Armor. That’s Moxie Paints’ clear coat, which not only finishes beautiful, it turns furniture  into a V.O.C. absorbing masterpiece! You’ll have to read more about the magic on Moxie’s site! coffee table makeover by a to z custom creations coffee table makeover by a to z custom creations coffee table makeover by a to z custom creations

Would you just look at her now? Absolutely radiant! Reminds me a lot of this ombre beauty! Could you have imagined it like this?

As crazy as it sounds, I saw her shining like that from beneath the piles of trash! I think it’s an innate ability I have to see things beyond what they presently are; to see beauty even in the broken. I’ve often called this “gift” a blessing and a curse because it keeps my mind churning all the time. Nonetheless, I’m so very thankful for it!

Do you have the gift? Would you like it? It can be learned! It’s true! All you have to do is make a conscious effort to look for beauty! Whether it be in furniture, a life situation, or the people around you for that matter…everything holds beauty. Just keep seeking it!

Keep creating it too, friends…fearlessly! Big. Fat. Smooches!

OH! One more thing…she’s available! Check my FB page for more info!

  1. Wow, what a great find and I love the ombre effect you did. I would have grabbed that table in a heartbeat just for the legs alone.

    • Exactly, Connie! I would have found a way to repurpose the legs, for sure! Thank you for taking the time to comment and for your kind compliment :) XO
